GLADIATOR SCULPTURE
The GLADIATOR SCULPTURE by Ernest Massuet captures the power and pathos of ancient Roman combat in extraordinary ceramic form. Standing 28.74 inches tall, this figure honours the warriors who fought — against other gladiators or wild beasts — with honour and resolve inside the Roman arena. At Lume Art Gallery it is one of the most commanding sculptural statements available.
About the GLADIATOR SCULPTURE
Ernest Massuet sculpted the figure in black porcelain, then applied copper, dark grey, and black enamels across the body surface, each layer building metallic depth and presence. The armor carries aged silver luster that gives the piece a weathered, battle-worn authority consistent throughout. The shield is finished in black luster with a marble effect, and the helmet repeats the aged silver treatment — every surface calibrated to read as metal while remaining unmistakably ceramic.
The sword — which passes for authentic metal on first inspection — is itself porcelain, an impressive technical achievement that reflects the sculptor’s command of the medium. A removable metal mask covers the gladiator’s face, held precisely in place by an ingenious magnetic system. Lift it away and a second character state is revealed beneath, giving the piece two distinct modes of display.

How to Display the GLADIATOR SCULPTURE
A piece nearly 2.5 feet tall and close to 15 lb earns a dedicated setting. Place it on a wide console table, a low display plinth, or a shelf deep enough to give the figure breathing room. The matte black body with its luster accents reads cleanly against neutral plaster, natural stone, or warm-toned wood. Rotate the mask on or off to suit the mood of the room — both states reward close-up inspection and reward the viewer who takes the time to look.
